ANIMAL HEALTH

HEALTH IS THE MOST BASIC ASPECT OF ANIMAL WELFARE.

Those aspects are naturally and perfectly covered in free life with no human intervention. Humans cause imbalance and derive in big ecological issues affecting wildlife populations and its health.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IS A HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS VIRAL PATHOLOGY THAT AFFECTS DOMESTIC AND WILD HOOFED ANIMALS (UNGULATES) CAUSING SEVERE ECONOMICAL AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ISSUES. THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE TELLING US HOW IMPORTANT AND STRONGLY BINDED ARE WILD ANIMAL HEALTH TO DOMESTIC ANIMALS AND TO HUMAN HEALTH.

ANIMAL WELFARE.

No matter if domestic or wild animals, these next 5 freedoms must be well provided.

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst: means allways to have free access to fresh water and a diet that meets their metabolism needs..

2. Freedom from discomfort: by providing an appropriate housing with a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from pain, illness and injuries: through prevention, prompt diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to express normal behaviour: by giving enough space according to the specie, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from fear and distress: by providing conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. That includes antropocentrism.

The African elephant is an endangered specie. They are dying not only to supply the Asian ivory market but also being killed because they compete with domestic cattle for food.

Wildlife health must always be under close surveillance

Overcrowded animals suffer, get easily sick, spread diseases and affect public health.

Small mammals, like every animal, need sufficient room and not just apparently "big" cages where they can barely move. They require large spaces to move and behave according to their species.

Please avoid walking your dog during hot hours or in a stressful way for it. Paws lesions and stress-related conditions may appear. What may seem practical and convenient for us may be against their own nature.

Emerging diseases and new epidemics can come from many sources and transmission routes.
